Virtual Television Studio Tour

This project aimed to create a self-paced e-learning tool that introduces first-year college students to a television studio's essential roles and responsibilities. The e-learning consisted of a virtual studio tour using a multimodality and audio narration approach to present information and feedback. The students could explore the studio at their own pace and click on various objects representing different positions, such as camera operator, audio engineer, director, etc. Each object provided a text-based description of the position, its requirements, and a video demonstration of the equipment and procedures. The virtual tour was based on Merrill’s First Principles Instruction, emphasizing task-centered learning. The students learned about the tasks and skills required for each position in the studio and how they contribute to the success of a live newscast or other programming. The project evaluation indicated that the virtual tour improved the students’ comprehension and reduced errors and issues during the studio production.

How this project was developed

Using Adobe Captivate, a virtual simulation of the university's TV studio was created, enabling learners to explore the environment autonomously. Additionally, Adobe Captivate facilitated the integration of assessment modules into the e-learning course, which could be linked to the learning management system for automatic grading and feedback.
